On April 15, 2026, Susanne Staiano, MSN, RN, CSN, delivered the Oral Statement at the 59th Session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD59) on behalf of the International Catholic Committee of Nurses and Medico-Social Assistants (CICIAMS). Susanne’s contribution as a member of the United Nations Team reflects her career-long dedication to pediatric rehabilitation, school nursing, and nursing administration.
Staiano focused this testimony on the session’s theme: “Population, technology, and research in the context of sustainable development.” The presentation emphasized several key pillars vital to the global Catholic nursing community, supporting the dignity of the human person:
- Bridging the Digital Divide: Staiano advocated for inclusive access to digital innovations, particularly for vulnerable groups such as the elderly and those living in poverty. She stressed that while technology like AI and telemedicine can support healthier lives, it must be implemented through a human-centered, rights-based approach that ensures no one is left behind due to age, clinical condition, income, or geography.
- Health and Dignity in Technology: Representing Catholic nurses worldwide, Susanne highlighted the importance of using research and technology to promote the well-being of all people from “Natural Birth to Natural Death.” She stated that The Nurses of CICIAMS condemn Euthanasia, Assisted Suicide, and Abortion. They promote the sanctity of life, human touch, and moral responsibility in using technology in healthcare. The goal is to bridge the care gaps while optimizing clinical workflows to keep nurses remain at the bedside.
