The Eucharistic Pilgrimage Procession and festivities will culminate in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania during Independence Day Observances.

Catholic History to Remember

In 1565, a Spanish fleet commanded by Don Pedro Menéndez de Avilés sighted land off the Florida east coast on the feast of St. Augustine of Hippo. In honor of the saint, Menendez named the new Spanish settlement San Agustin known today as St. Augustine. The St. Augustine settlement was established 42 years before Jamestown and 55 years before the Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth Rock.

Especially this 4th of July, Catholics everywhere are asked to reflect on the role our faith has and continues to play in shaping our country’s past, present, and future. A final historic note, these events also coincide with the 75th anniversary of the addition of the phrase “one nation under God” to our country’s Pledge of Allegiance.
